我們都知道「繼續」是 continue
但大家對於「繼續的」這個形容詞總是黑人問號
continuous、continual 到底有什麼差別？

continuous

continuous 的意思是「不斷的；連續的；持續的」，指整個事發的過程都沒有中斷。

The continuous rain caused a massive landslide which blocked the only road into the village.
連日大雨導致大規模的山崩，截斷了前往村莊的唯一道路。

句中的 continuous rain，是指大雨完全沒停歇、不斷地下著。

它的副詞形是 continuously。

The copy machine operated continuously around the clock.
影印機日以繼夜地不停運轉著。

continual

continual 則是指「一再的；頻繁的；反覆發生的」，常用來形容惱人的事或討厭的事。

The baseball game has been postponed indefinitely due to the continual rain this month.
因為這個月雨下個不停，所以棒球比賽只好被無限期延長。

句中的 continual rain 不是指這一個月每分每秒、無時無刻都在下雨，而是斷斷續續地下了一個月，或是下沒多久就停，停沒多久又下，就像最近的天氣一樣，讓小 V 好憂鬱啊！

continually 是其副詞形，我們直接來看例句。

I cried continually when I was watching A Star Is Born. It’s a real tearjerker!
我在看《一個巨星的誕生》時一直哭個沒完。它真的是一部催淚好片！ 

句中的 cried continually 也不是指整整兩小時都在哭，是指在電影播放中哭了好幾次。

constant

constant 所形容的持續狀態是指某事「經常發生的；不斷發生的」或「一直存在的」，強調狀態長期且頻繁地出現。

The constant arguments they had brought their relationship to an end.
爭執不休讓他們倆的關係走向終點。

constant arguments 是表示爭吵的情況長期發生、三天兩頭就吵一次。

The teacher’s constant encouragement convinced the vulnerable students to pursue their dreams.
這位老師長期不斷的鼓勵說服了這些弱勢學生追逐夢想。

constant encouragement 則代表老師從以前到現在都一直給予鼓勵，這份鼓勵一直存在。

constant 也有「不變的；(狀態) 穩定的」之意。

The birth rate in Taiwan has remained constant for the last decade.
台灣的出生率在這十年來趨於穩定。

其副詞形是 constantly。

endless

這個字由 end 跟 less 組成，字尾 -less 有「缺乏；沒有；無」的意思，所以 endless 也就是「永無止境的；不會結束的」之意，指事情或狀態會一直持續下去，可以用於負面的情況。

The boring seminar seemed endless and most of the attendees were phubbing.
那場無聊的研討會好像永遠不會結束一樣，大多數的與會者都在滑手機。

此外它也可以形容數量很多的，中文也會說「永無止境的；無窮無盡的；無數的」，同義於 countless、innumerable。

Kids always have endless questions; they’re very curious about the world.
小孩子永遠都有數不清的問題，因為他們對這個世界感到非常好奇。

ceaseless

這個字也是由 cease 跟 less 組成的，動詞 cease 是「停止；終止」，所以 ceaseless 就是「不間斷的；一直持續的；不會結束的」，是比較文學性的字眼。

The ceaseless wars left most of the citizens homeless.
永無止境的戰爭讓多數人民無家可歸。

incessant

incessant 也是「毫不間斷的；沒完沒了的」，跟 continuous 一樣，整個事發過程都沒有間斷，但它帶有貶意，常用來形容讓你心煩、不愉快的事。

The incessant crying from the twin babies drove the new parents crazy.
雙胞胎寶寶沒完沒了的哭聲快把新手爸媽搞瘋了。
